A Mother’s Day Special: BELLE

Amma Asante’s BELLE is an exciting and elegant coming of age story about a young woman of color that is written and directed from the point of view of a woman of color. It is a rarity in cinema history. Don’t miss it. Take your mum, auntie, grandmum, or friend for Mother’s Day. In theatres now. The film is based on the real life story of two cousins growing up in aristrocratic London of the late 1770’s. The filmmaker was inspired by the Potrait of Dido and Cousin Elizabeth before she received the initial script. Ms. Asante did more research, re-wrote the screenplay and crafted an incredible story with romance, humor, political intrigue, feminist and anti-slavery messages. Starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Tom Wilkinson, Miranda Richardson, Penelope Wilton, Matthew Goode, Emily Watson, and Tom Felton.
